Dermal Fillers

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Belissima dermal fillers are composed of Hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid naturally exists within the skin giving volume, shape, hydration and elasticity. It has minimal risk of reactions and is more readily accepted by the body than other silicone or collagen fillers. These are the safest and most natural looking dermal fillers and can always be dissolved if needed.

Where can Dermal Fillers be used?

Dermal fillers can be used to treat different areas of the face, including:

  • Nose / Rhinoplasty
  • Under Eye / Tear Trough
  • Cheek Lift
  • Lip contouring / Augmentation
  • Nasolabial Folds
  • Marionette Lines
  • Jaw Augmentation
  • Chin Augmentation

Some methods are more appropriate for some people than others. We take great care to assess this and discuss it with you.

What Are The Benefits Of Dermal Fillers?

  • Immediate results – unlike anti-aging creams, you can instantly see the difference after a dermal filler injection. The filler then takes just a few days to settle for the optimum effect.
  • No downtime – dermal fillers are a non-invasive procedure, so there’s no post-op healing or recovery time needed. The procedure is quite quick and can be done in less than an hour.
  • Long-lasting results, but not permanent – dermal fillers can last from 6 to 18 months. You can choose a shorter time period so you can see if you like the results first. You can then commit to a longer period or change the placement of the filler next time.
  • Natural looking effect – dermal fillers are subtle, so unlike some other procedures they won’t alter your facial expressions or make you unrecognisable. You’ll look like the best version of yourself, with smoother skin and improved facial contours.

What are the risks and side effects?

  • Bruising: Risk of bruising, redness, swelling, pain at the injection site, tenderness, itching, allergic reaction, and raised bumps of skin (nodules). These symptoms are usually mild and typically last a few days but can last up to a few months. In rare cases bruising can last several months and even be permanent.
  • Asymmetry, overcorrection, or undercorrection.
  • Infection: Post treatment bacterial, viral and/or fungal infections can occur which in most cases are easily treatable but in rare cases a permanent scarring in the area can occur.
  • Blindness: A remote and rare risk is that of filler injection into a blood vessel (blood vessel occlusion) or overfilling tissue that can block blood flow to the treated area or to distant areas, causing tissue damage and tissue death (necrosis), which can be seen as skin breakdown or ulceration. Blood vessel occlusion near the eye can result in blindness.

How long do Dermal fillers last?

For certain dermal filler procedures topical anaesthetic is first applied and left to numb the skin for 20-30 minutes. The dermal filler is then injected into the area required using a very fine needle or blunt ended cannula.

Results can be seen immediately after dermal filler treatments and each brand and make of filler can last a different length of time and also depends on your metabolism. Some last around 6 months and others can last 12 to 18 months. The part of the face the filler was placed in can also affect how long it lasts. Filler can wear off more quickly in mobile areas like the lips. Filler that is denser like those used for cheek bones or jaw line will also last longer.

Aftercare Instructions

  • Skin redness and swelling in the treatment area is common. This should resolve within a few days. If it persists longer than 3 days, please contact your physician.
  • Do not massage the treated areas.
  • Avoid lying down for 4 hours immediately after treatment.
  • Avoid applying heat to the treated area until any swelling or bruising have resolved. Routine washing and showering is fine.
  • Avoid activities that cause facial flushing on the day of treatment including: consuming alcohol, exercising, and tanning.
  • Gently apply a cool compress or wrapped ice pack to the treated areas for 15 minutes every few hours as needed to reduce discomfort, swelling, or bruising up to a few days after treatment. If bruising occurs, it typically resolves within 7–10 days.
  • After treatment, oral and/or topical Arnica may help reduce bruising and swelling.
  • If 2–4 weeks after treatment you feel that you require a touch-up, please contact your aesthetician.
