Fat Dissolving Injections

What are fat dissolving injections?

Fat dissolving injections (intralipotherapy) are a safe, effective treatment used to treat those exercise resistant fat cells for long lasting results. Very effective for body contouring, you can get rid of those annoying stubborn fat pockets in areas such as around the chin, arms, back (love handles), abdomen, calves and thighs.

DesoBody, DesoFace, Aqualyx and Lipolab fat loss injections are the most popular fat dissolving treatments. The injections contain deoxycholic acid; a bile salt produced by the gallbladder, which is used to break down the adipocytes or fat cells that we eat. This causes a localised inflammatory response from the body then the body’s macrophages come to the site to engulf the fat and take it to the lymphatic system where it is taken to the liver, metabolised and naturally is excreted from the body over 3 – 6 weeks.

This revolutionary amazing treatment which has arrived in the UK (known as KYBELLA® in the US), is very similar to Aqualyx and Lipolab, which are also available at Belissima.

Are fat dissolving injections safe?

An article published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology in 2017 found that there had been 990,000 vials of Adipocytolytic solution used by the end of 2016 in the UK with not one single patient reporting any serious reaction.

Lidocaine is added into the deoxycholic acid for your comfort. The procedure is very well tolerated.  However, there will be a little discomfort (aching, swelling and tenderness) and potential for bruising post treatment for up to 7 days.

Where can I be injected?

DesoFace® fat dissolving injections can be used to reduce localised fat deposits found under the chin, neck, jowls and jawline. This can be taken as an individual treatment or along with dermal fillers to provide a complete jawline restructuring/rejuvenation service.

DesoBody® can be used on the upper and lower abdomen, flanks, hips, upper and lower back (‘love handles’), inner and outer thighs, arms, buttocks and calves.

What are the side effects?

The side effects of this treatment are minimal and self-resolving. As mentioned before, the body’s inflammatory process is key to the success of this treatment. So, minor swelling is to be expected. Swelling normally subsides after 48 hours and an ice pack is recommended to help it settle.

Up to 50% of patients experience some level of numbness in the location of the injections; this resolves itself but can last up to 30 days.

Most patients experience a warmth and reddening to the treatment area. This usually passes in 24 hours.

Around 30% of patients report a hardening of the treatment area, lasting up to two months.

How long does the treatment take to work?

Fat loss results take approximately 3 – 6 weeks to show, however, the treated area will continue to improve over the coming weeks and months, with subsequent treatments further improving the overall result. It produces long-lasting results, which means you can banish those unwanted areas of stubborn fat.

How many treatments are required?

Most patients require three or four treatments, usually two-four weeks apart.  The whole process will take 30 minutes, and you can return to normal activities straight away. If the double chin area is treated, swelling will start almost immediately. You can return to your normal activities once you feel ready, but the area may feel tender for up to 2 weeks. We advise no strenuous exercises for seven days to allow the treatment to settle in. If you have the double chin treated, we would also suggest you pick a time where you can avoid social events for seven days. You can wear a scarf or turtle-neck jump to hide the swelling for until it settles.

Do you lose weight with fat dissolving injections?

Fat dissolving injections provide lasting results for body contouring, to shift resistant pockets of fat, but is not a treatment for weight loss.
